Where Would Jesus Give To In Times Like This?

Matthew 24 : 3-8As Jesus was sitting on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately. "Tell us," they said, "… what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?"
Jesus answered: "Watch out that no one deceives you. For many will come in my name, claiming, 'I am the Christ, and will deceive many. You will hear of wars and rumors of wars, but see to it that you are not alarmed. Such things must happen, but the end is still to come. Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains.

We are certainly living in the days nearing the end of the age and in troubled times indeed. The recent string of disasters all around us is a testament of that fact. We were first shocked at the fury and devastation of the super Typhoon Ketsana which has caused massive floods and destroyed houses and farms in Philippines, Vietnam and Laos since 26 September. Then, barely 3 days later, we were stunned by the massive 8.3 magnitude earthquake and tsunami which wiped out entire villages in Samoa. Almost immediately, another massive 7.6 magnitude earthquake hit Padang, Sumatra. The Sumatran earthquake tremors were even felt in many parts of Malaysia.

In all these disasters, many lives were lost, untold numbers were made homeless, entire villages were destroyed. Women became widows and children became orphans. Suffering, hardship, pain, hunger, broken lives resulted. Cries for help rang throughout the world and many are responding to the plight of these unfortunate victims.

(These photos are compiled from the Star newspaper and online resources)
Volunteers are being mobilised to go to the aid of these people. Funds are being set up and many are coming forward to give. It is everyone’s hope that their little help extended will bring some relief to the poor victims and help to wipe away their tears. But really, none of us can ever fathom or even imagine the hurt, the pain, the suffering which these fellow human beings are going through right now. Seeing such tremendous suffering around us, what should our attitude be as Christians?
Deuteronomy 15:7 - “If there is a poor man among your brothers in any of the towns of the land that the LORD your God is giving you, do not be hardhearted or tightfisted toward your poor brother.”
Deuteronomy 26:12 - “When you have finished setting aside a tenth of all your produce in the third year, the year of the tithe, you shall give it to the Levite, the alien, the fatherless and the widow, so that they may eat in your towns and be satisfied.”
Proverbs 14:31 - “He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God.”1 Timothy 6:18 - “Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and to be generous and willing to share.”James 1:27 - “Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.”
1 John 3:17 - “If anyone has material possessions and sees his brother in need but has no pity on him, how can the love of God be in him?”

Proverbs 22:9 - “A generous man will himself be blessed, for he shares his food with the poor.”
Isaiah 58:10 - "And if you spend yourselves in behalf of the hungry and satisfy the needs of the oppressed, then your light will rise in the darkness, and your night will become like the noonday."
Proverbs 19:17 - “He who is kind to the poor lends to the LORD, and he will reward him for what he has done.”
While the whole world is responding in compassion and mercy, here in Kuala Lumpur, the pastors of Calvary Church are busy encouraging or almost forcing the church staff and life group leaders to sell coupons for the coming Calvary carnival in an effort to raise funds to build the extravagant world-class 5,000-seat Calvary Convention Centre (CCC) costing no less than RM200 million including land.

To achieve their sales target, bundles of coupons are shoved into the hands of the church staff and life group leaders who are “encouraged” not to return unsold coupons but only to hand in the cash for the coupons. This has put unnecessary burden on the church staff and lay leaders.

There should not be a need to compel church leaders and church staff to hard sell the coupons in order to raise funds. Our God is a rich God and if indeed, the CCC is His vision and His will, He will surely provide the funds. There is no need for Senior Pastor and his pastors and deacons to worry. They just need to trust in Him and exercise the faith which they preached about.

However, every Calvarite (including the pastors and deacons, if they will be honest enough) knows that this mammoth Convention Centre, if completed, will become another white elephant which will suck every cent from the church coffers just to maintain it. Yet the leadership can be so blinded as to continue to push the members to give to the building of this centre and in the process, lay heavy yokes on the shoulders of the church members. Where is their conscience?

How can the leadership of Calvary Church say that they are followers of Jesus but continue to have their priorities totally out of sync with the heartbeat of God? Jesus did not come to build mega churches or big convention centres. He came to build lives…. period! The Bible says He came for the poor and needy, for the widows and orphans. That is what missions is all about…..touching lives and saving souls. Missions is never about buildings. Buildings can never bring glory to God. Lives touched and won for God will bring glory to God.
Therefore, in harsh and troubled times like this, when people are dying around us, when the cries of the poor and the suffering echo all around, when love and compassion are much needed, every child of God and every church ought to re-examine themselves and set their priorities right.

CalvaryToday hopes that all the funds raised in the coming Calvary carnival, bowling event and golf tournament will be totally channeled to the victims of the recent calamities. Better still, the Church should sell off the CCC project and give the proceeds to where Jesus would give to.

Matthew 19:20 “‘All these I have kept,’ the young man said. ‘What do I still lack?’ Jesus answered, ‘If you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions (the CCC?) and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.’"

So, dear Senior Pastor Tan Sri Prince Guneratnam, what say you?

AND, To all Calvarites, WHERE WOULD YOU GIVE TO IN TIMES LIKE THIS?

Who is our Neighbour? said...

Calvary Today,

You are absolutely right! CC leadership has gotten all their priorities wrong... SP, Pastors and BOD have the wrong priorities and certainly are out of tune with God's desires and purpose for the Church.

SP and pastors preach one thing but they are doing something else. Why must the building of CCC proceed at all costs? Is it because they have to save face?

In the face of such calamities how can CC leaders still blindly go ahead with CCC building and splashing on sheer extravagance and opulence and letting real urgent needs go by?

I recall the story of the Good Samaritan, the parable which Jesus told. So who is our neighbour? Who is the Levite who walked past the injured and dying robber?

CC is Bible based and religious and capable in fact, amply blessed to meet such real needs but would SP, Pastors and BOD turn a blind eye and simply walk past these real and pressing needs of the disaster victims?

Who is our neighbour? Who shall be the Good Samaritan?

Why should CC leaders be so adamant to build CCC at the expense of real pressing needs?

Would Jesus be pleased with what He sees happening here in CC?

Dear Friend

Another interesting article from Calvary Today.

Click the following link to read how badly Calvary Church, KL treats certain invited preachers.

http://calvarytoday.blogspot.com/2009/09/pastor-phils-story.html

Pray along with many of our members that God will quickly clean up our beloved church
of her sinful wayward ways, worldly ambitions, unrighteousness and un-Godliness.

May His glory be restored in our church.

Dear Calvary Today

This is what Christianity is all about. As Christ laid down His life for us, we are now called to lay down 'self' for OTHERS.

May the Lord bless you for you have felt HIS HEART BEAT - and HIS HEART BEAT IS ALWAYS FOR OTHERS!

Two Golf Events? said...

Er? I thought that the golf fundraising is on the 16th Oct 2009? You mean there's two golf events? One known (to church members & announced) and one unknown? Can I-Report clarify?

CALVARY TODAY said...

Based on a complaint from a reader, CT made a check and found out that "I Report"'s comments were based on a article which was written by a pastor in his blog in 2007. The article was on a golf tournament organised by Calvary Church in 2007 as a fund-raiser for the CCC.

It was probably an oversight by "I Report" in leaving out the date of the 2007 golf event.

To avoid any misunderstanding and unnecessary debate, CT has deleted the said comment.

Man's Vision said...

PG should abandoned his vision of CCC. It doesn't glorify God at all to build a church designed by a freemason and to spend so much money on a mere building.

With such a grand building, I'm sure when anti-Christ take control in end times, he will use CCC as his KL headquarters! Why use church money to do that?

PG can easily build a simple 3,000 seating church for less than RM30 million and preach twice a Sunday to accomodate up to 6,000 people.
Of course in reality, he don't need to preach twice coz CC only has 1,000 members and another 1,000
worshippers.

Rest of the money can go to feed the hungry and destitute and for real missions work.

CC did take an offering for the victims of Philipines and Indonesia as a 2nd offering on last Sunday......

apparently the congregation gave around 50K......

hope this sum will really go immediately out of the coffers of CC and not land anywhere else.]

An Insatiable hunger for charity fund-raising events said...

Calvary Church's leadership has a reputation of an insatiable hunger to raise money from both inside and outside the church grounds.

But what do SP and the BODs do with the special collections of love offerings and financial help given - at their whims and fancies keep the cash collections and then tell the members and worshippers(upon discovery) stories like the visiting pastor's airfare cost too much already(hence he is NOT entitled to special love offerings collected) and the Indonesian party said the funds collected were no longer needed for the quake victims.

When the church stewards are so used to spending the lion's share of tithes, love offerings and mission givings on senior pastor, spouse and family with worldly executive compensations and perks to support a higher station of life-style, somewhere the funds collected earmarked for special needs and mission projects got to suffer severe cuts. At the May/June small groups' meetings, specially invited Calvarites were told twisted "facts"

Since the inception of the pronoucement of SP's vision to purchase a piece of land at Bukit Jalil for the Convention Centre Building abt six years ago, there have been never-ending needs for this or that charity and fund-raising activities from inside and outside Calvary Church. The old issues of Calvary Newsletter will provide all the full facts(more than a dozen of fund-raiising activities already) from the hosting of dinners,carnival/food fairs, jumble sales, golf events, Bit-sizes, pledges and donations (tax-exempt and no tax exempt basis)

A pastor invited to play at the Mines Resort 2007 golf charity wrote in his blog hitting a spiritual "hole-in-one" (using a golfing jargon)

To summarise the pastor's blog posting "there were 72participating golfers of whom many are tycoons. Calavry Church managed to raise RM120,000 for this charity event. The pastor- blogger also commented that "the hearts must be touched first before the pockets can be opened"

Give and receive said...

Thanks "Giver" for the update. My guess is that they are planning to give RM50k to look good to the world, that's why they announced they received RM50k. Any amount less won't look good when the big time Tan Sri appears in the newspaper holding the mock cheque and handing over to Datuk Wong Chun Wai. Then he will take the oportunity to "advertise" his fund raising for ccc in that event. This is how predictable our church's action is. Quite Biblical actually = Give and you shall receive free advertisement.

Offering 4 the Needy said...

On Give and Receive's guess on "how predicatble our church's action is" - I believe that the funds we raised will be channeled through the AOG and not through Star. This was clearly announced before the offering was taken.

God's Vision or mere man's vision said...

Give and Receive,

It is the typical form of using media to sway the hearts of simple minded trusting people who have been deceived by CC leaders!

New members and worshippers may be influenced by the leadership.. as all the glossy brochures and advertisements appear very impressive and "CCC promoters" are also very persuasive.

Thanks to CT for bringing out the true state of affairs in the open. In the past members and worshippers and even friends of members have been very trusting and willingly gave to whatever fund raising projects concocted by CC leadership. Until low and behold we found out through TTG that the moneys were channelled elsewhere into private avenues!

Despite all these months (past year)CC leadership has so cleverly covered up these discoveries and gave neat and well crafted stories to members through small group meetings.

Surely the truth will be revealed in due course.

If CCC is not God's Plan and Vision but merely a man's vision it will not be realized no matter how hard men try to bring it to past!

Thanks for answering to the readers over the I-Report on the CCC fund raising Golf Event.

I-Report wish to state the date has no relevance to the commentary, as it was highlighting the ways of PG & the 'Modern times' pastors who are caught up in the attractions and lifestyle of the World.

There was no confusion intended whatsoever.

Peanuts said...

Addressing comment by "insatiable hunger...". By what that pastor wrote, CC raised RM120k from 72 golfers in 2007. If by division it would average to RM1,666.66 each person. Earlier somone said, many tycoons attended that charity event. If so many tycoons attended then about RM2k a person is very little. Looks like the tycoons present that day, their hearts were not touched by God that's why they gave so little. Seriously, 2k for rich tycoons is peanuts. Think about it. So even at that time, God already not touching rich man's heart to give to ccc. So sad but then at least 1 pastor went back happy and blessed from that event - in 2007.

Any Good Stewardship in CC said...

Ecclesiastes 5:10-16

10 "Whoever loves money never has money enough;
whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income,
That too is meaningless.

11 As goods increase,
so do those who consume them.
And what benefit are they to the owner except to feast his eyes upon them?

12 The sleep of the labourer is sweet,
whether he eats little or much,
but the abundance of the rich man permits him no sleep.

13 I have seen the grievious evil under the sun:
wealth hoarded to the harm of the owner,

14 or wealth lost through some misfortune,
so that when he has a son there is nothing left for him.

15 Naked a man comes from his mother's womb, and as he comes, so he departs.
He takes nothing from his labour that he can carry in his hand.

16 This too is a grievious evil:

As a man comes, so he departs, and what does he gains since he toils for the wind?"

May we be reminded that wealth is God's gift to us, it is by God's grace that we can enjoy the wealth that He blesses us with and furthermore wealth is impermanent.

So let remind ourselves and make sure that we do not seek wealth and hoard it so that in the end we will even lose our soul. The parable of the rich man who kept on building bigger and bigger barns is a good illustration for us... It is a spiritual responsibility, it is about stewardship.

Similarly I believe the lessons also apply to the Church, the Body of Christ.

Our church leaders are also stewards for the wealth that members have entrusted to them.

We as members need to ask:
1. Have our leaders wisely applied the gifts entrusted to them? or
2. Have they hoarded it? or
3. Have they used it for the wrong purposes?
4. Have they been responsible, honest and truthful in all Church dealings?

There is nothing wrong to ask these questions even when it is about church gifts.

We should never feel intimidated to think that we have no right to ask these questions.

In fact if we don't ask then we are being negligent and we would have indirectly allowed our leaders to be negligent and careless as well.

It is all about STEWARDSHIP again. It is our Christian responsibility which we must exercise and be accountable for.

Is CIM still a accredited ministry? I thought that CIM has been deregistered by AOG, Malaysia. If CIM is not recognised by AOG, then it should no longer be in business!

In the write-up on "Sunday with Prince & Petrina Guneratnam" by Evangel, PG is mentioned as the President and Founder of Calvary International Ministries and PG2 as the co-founder and Vice-President of the Calvary International Ministries.

I remember reading on this blog that a writer had mentioned that TTG could talk to his brother Robert Lim, however after reading the write-up by Evangel, my opinion is that this will be a waste of time.

NOTHING BUT SELF PROMOTION & THE LIES CONTINUE

Thanks to 'Latest, Latest' for posting the news of PGs' overseas speaking engagement.

Frightening that the act of deceit is continuing:
1.How could CC's BOD still allow PGs preach under CIM, when they are on CC pay roll? Wasn't this deemed as 'moonlighting' as voiced-out by a member at the previous year AGM?

2. Didn't the BOD said at the AGM they would address the ambiguous name CIM which could be mistaken as being CC's Ministry when in fact it is PG's couple personal 'mini$try'

3.Hasn't NECF admitted that CIM was misrepresented to them as belonging to CC when it was registered? ( NECF never registers Personal Ministry)

4.Can this be true: "Petrina Guneratnam...and pioneered the first Assemblies of God church, the Glad Tidings Assembly of God in Klang,..." Really, "the 1st AOG" church??? !

5. The write-up about themselves-- makes one's stomach churns!

Re the Indo Earth quake fund, it is expected the long arm of law will catch-up with them real soon, at God's perfect timing.

To Latest Latest: A slight correction to your comment that, "CIM has been deregistered by AOG, Malaysia." CIM was not registered as a body with the AOG Malaysia. It was registered with NECF, when SP was serving as their Chairman in 2003. You can see this in the archives of NECF – Jul – Aug 2003 magazine through their website. You can also read about it in CT’s archive in November 2008entitled: CIM to be De-Registered by NECF.

WILL PG REPAY EXPENSES CLAIMED? (under Dubious Situations)

Today's STAR, PM of UK & his MPs are repaying 'claims' made that never should have been( from taxpayers' money)

Well, PG must do the same.. it was said he has claimed Dog Food money under security!
Actually, it may just be the tip of the iceberg. Eg:

i) Why is he claiming the maintenance of his PERSONAL Volvo SUV--(a gift from "Anonymous" )? when he has an official car from the church.

ii) the same goes for PG's wife--Honda Civic!

iii) And Gardener salary? ( what are his actual benefits, only PG knows--he draws it up himself, --and rubber stamp by BOD)

iv) and CCTV in his private home?

v) and Maid/Cleaners?
ETC, ETC, ETC over the decades--using Church/Congregation Money collected from offerings meant for God's work.

Of course no one knows for sure how deep this
whole "claim as he & family like" for all the years!

Concern Members of TTG CAUSE, do press on to set-up THE TRUTH COMMITTEE

Yes
CIM to be De-Registered by NECF.

But CIM is registered oversea too,
therefore PG and his wife can continue to use CIM.

So how to get the money that is in CIM oversea??????

If CIM Malaysia can returned RM1.9Million,

IMAGINE HOW MUCH MONEY PG HAS FOR CIM UNITED STATES !!!!!!!!

CIM oversea still functioning cos authority has not check on that yet.

Thus PG and wife can still go about as directors of CIM

Contractor Watch said...

Update on CCC - never revealed by CC

The superstructure contract by contractor N..F..E expired few days ago. 20 months past but what percentage of the work done! Less than 30% as estimated.

Where is the wisdom of PG and BOD in appointing this contractor? Are they to be held responsible for this failure?

Will God send a failed contractor to build a church building if it is His will?

God's Vision or PG's vision? said...

Contractor Watch said "Will God send a failed contractor to build a church building if it is His Will?"

Likewise, we need to ask ourselves "Will God send us a Free-Mason Architect to design His House?"

If not, then "Is CCC really His House & His Vision or his (PG's) vision?"

Meditate & pray for God to reveal to you whether He wants CCC to be built or not. Remember to do God's Will & not man's will.

As is written in Psalms 127:1 "Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it".

In Luke 14:28-30, Jesus tells a parable about the "man who did not count his cost, began to build & was left with an unfinished tower". Did PG & BOD really counted the costs or did they just go on blind faith?

God sent a sister to warn CC at an EGM by quoting Luke 14:28 but yet PG & BOD chose not to heed the warning & instead chose to bulldoze ahead with his (PG's) project.

PG has been pushing for CCC to be built, even before some of the other churches around decide to build their own churches. Now they are already enjoying the Lord's blessing in their new premises while CC (& PG) is still labouring in vain to build what the Lord doesn't want.

Restoration for His church said...

It all boils down to too much pride in CC leaders starting from SP to BOD. All the striving and labour to ensure CCC is being built and completed in order that PG's dream can be realized.

Whilst pursuing the dream they have missed the real purpose and calling for the church. We are called to be the salt to the earth, a light to the nations and a city on a hill BUT instead the salt has lost its taste, the light is placed under the bed and the city has been fraught with idolatry and worldly pursuits!

How long will the Lord be patient with His shepherds? Won't He come soon with healing for His suffering lambs?

We believe God will act and restore His church because the church belongs to Him and not the earthly shepherds.

GOD IS FAITHFUL, HOLY & JUST!

Contractor Watch II said...

Much have been said about the freemason architect and failed contractor.

What was not said is the truth about the whole project. Let's challenge the Sn Pastor and all deacons to tell the whole congregation nothing but the truth of what's really happening to the building project.

TO PASTORS/DEACONS : To please God is to stop abusing the congregation. Tell them the truth before you next ask for funds.

TO THE CONGREGATION : Believers ought not be blind followers of pastor. Be followers of Christ, Be led by the Holy Spirit, Be discerning as the days of evil is here.
