Is Calvary’s Faith Promise Giving a Sham?

For many years, Senior Pastor Prince Guneratnam (PG) has boasted to the world that Calvary Church has given away millions of ringgit to Missions and Evangelism every year.

Twice a year on Faith Promise Sunday in January and July, when new 6-month pledges are solicited from the congregation, PG and the Missions Director will show video clips of the Missions Projects which the Church has supported in the previous 6 months. And as always is the case, PG will also proudly declare to the congregation that due to their overwhelming giving towards their faith promise pledges, there is a surplus over the Missions Budget and that surplus will be channeled to the Church Building Fund.

The members have constantly been led to believe that all their Faith Promise
contributions are given away to support Bible schools, Christian organizations, missionaries and missions work throughout the world and only the surplus funds over the budget are kept by the Church for Calvary’s own building fund.

Before the Calvary saga erupted about 4 years ago with the exposure of financial mismanagement, unethical practices and abuse of power and position in the Church, Calvarites have never doubted PG and his Pastors and Deacons. Now, the members, having been wised up to PG’s true character are beginning to question the utilization of the Faith Promise funds collected from members.

Picking up on several requests from readers, CT decided to investigate this particular topic of discussion going on in the Blog and for this purpose, CT perused through the past years’ Church Annual Reports, Missions Fund Reports and the reports of the Extended Ministries of the Church.

At a glance, the Missions Fund Reports appeared to be in order. All the Faith Promise collections appeared to be properly disbursed and accounted for. It was only when CT started cross referencing and extracting various figures from all the various reports that CT discovered a shocking fact.

And the shocking fact is that from 2008 to 2012, from the total Faith Promise collection each year, less than 10% was given away to external parties. More than 90% of Faith Promise collections was kept internally to finance Calvary’s own ministries, staff payroll and the church building program, which is now, the Calvary Convention Centre (CCC).

For 2011, only
RM228,246 or 6.6% of the total Faith Promise collection of RM3.44 million was distributed to Bible schools and external Missions work.

19.3% were utilized to pay the church staff salaries and church outreach workers,
18.9% was utilized to support the church’s Extended Ministries like AIM, Communication Ministry, Prayer Tower, Calvaryland etc,
7.2% was transferred to Outreach Property Fund,
39.4% transferred to fund the CCC construction and the balance
8.5% retained in the Missions Fund.

Click on the image 1 to view the comparison between the official version and the real version of the utilization of the Faith Promise collections for the years 2008 to 2011.

Click on image 2 to view the Missions Fund’s Statement of Income and Expenditure.

It is fair to conclude that what is presented and declared to the congregation year after year, is nothing but pure misrepresentation of what actually happens to their sacrificial giving in Faith Promise. This act of misrepresentation and misleading the congregation by PG and his Pastors and Deacons is totally unacceptable and despicable.

On the subject of misrepresentation, CT also investigated the issue of the “real” staff costs of all the pastors and employees of Calvary Church. Most members do not realize that the amount of staff costs/stipends stated in the main Church accounts in the Annual Report does not cover the entire staff force of the Church. That amount stated represents the salaries of only the Pastors and some selected church staff. The rest of the church staff and all the outreach workers are paid from the Missions Fund with a handful of staff being paid from the Extended Ministries’ accounts.

This breaking up of staff costs and hiding under separate accounts or funds is again another issue of transparency.

The actual total staff costs of the Church come up to a mind-boggling figure of RM4.5 million for 2011. This represents about 54% of the total Income of the Church from tithes and offerings and donations/income received by the Extended Ministries. The contributions to the church building fund and faith promise are excluded in computing the percentage as both these collections are specific and meant for their respective purposes and are not deemed as income for church operational use.

Click on image 3 to view the breakdown of staff costs.

According to the MISSIONS MANUAL of Calvary Church, it states that,
The Missions Dept was then formed to look into the matter of the administration of missionary funds and the development of a strong missions programme to look into the sending out of missionaries, the accomplishing of greater nation-wide and worldwide expansion in missions and the attaining of greater efficiency in missionary matters in    general.

PURPOSE OF THE MISSIONS FUND

This fund seeks to provide full or partial financial support or sponsorship towards approved missions projects carried out locally or abroad. It also provides a reliable and responsible channel (or vehicle) for which designated offerings may be transmitted.

Has the Missions Department fulfilled its original purpose as stated in the Mission Manual?

Have the funds collected through the Faith Promise Programme been distributed in accordance to the stated Purpose of the Missions Fund?

With another Faith Promise Sunday coming up in July, let us hope that the congregation will be smart and seek God’s wisdom before they put their pen to the Pledge Card. Above all, let us hope that PG and his Pastors and Deacons will respect the intent and faith of the giver and release every ringgit collected through the Faith Promise program to fulfill the purposes of Missions and Evangelism for which the program was originally intended.

re: Signs of Abusive church or cults

Control-Oriented Leadership
Manipulation of Members
Denouncing All Other Churches
Persecution Complex(see themselves as the ONLY God-selected group, thus expect "persecution")
Targeting Young Adults and vulnerable groups

Just few examples of abusive church. Let ask if our church is safe? If not, move to another.

How Pastors Get Rich
(an article by Cultwatch Director Mark Vrankovich)
http://www.cultwatch.com/HowPastorsGetRich.html

First let's discover the primary pattern behind their methods(in summary)

1. The Multilevel Marketing Pattern
2. Books
3. DVDs
4. Hyped Conferences
5. The Christian Speaking Circuit
6. Pastor Owned Businesses that Feed Off the Flock
7. The Honor The Pastor Scam
8. High Pressure Offerings
9. Cathedral Building Wars(who can build a bigger church building. Yes, building are SO important!)
10. Siphoning Cash into Property
11. Excessive Wages
12. Perks
13. Nepotism
14. Their Fabricated Tithing Doctrine
15. The Carrot and the Stick

The author said-
"I believe many church goers would be shocked if they could comprehend the real attitude their pastor has towards them. From my experience with both the cults and these money focused churches, it is my impression that instead of being looked upon with love, these pastors see their congregation as farm animals to be milked."

The following is quoted from the article on "The rise of mega churches" in the Star paper July 7th refering to City Harvest church.

"There was a pop-style band playing deafening music - more like a rock concert than a church service"

The above is true. How can they have such worldly rock music to worship a Holy God. I remember years ago, Calvary church held an evangelistic campaign in Bukit Jalil Stadium. I brought my 2 nephews to hear the Word of God hoping they would find salvation in Christ. I was annoyed and surprised to see a rock band on stage playing deafening 'christian rock music". The stage was dark and lights flashing around the stage that resembled exactly like a pop rock concert. This is not a preaching campaign but more like an entertainment. Immediately I knew how my 2 nephews would react when I looked at the expression on their faces. They had perhaps came to hear what God had to say and this is totally not what they expected. Obviously they had been to many rock concerts and this so called evangelistic campaign is no different from them. I held them on the hear the Word of God, but though they heard for a very short while, they insisted on leaving as the damage was doned. This type of worship is typical of all Charismatic & Pentecostal churches, they are not of God. They usually had a rock band on stage with back up dancers. Today spirit- filled hyms that God gave us to worship Him had been taken off and replaced by contemporary christain pop music & songs, all because they want to attract & please the crowd. But we must know that worship is not about the crowd, but worship is all about God, honouring and pleasing Him.

It described the churches are nothing but "money raising institutions" that had made them rich and living comfortable lives on their members money...
.........................................
Most of the so called "churches" in KL today are nothing but money raising institutions under various guises. But because the symbol of the cross is put somewhere within the building- the sheep are easily deceived.
I used to attend CC for a short time. As the worship begins, there on the big screen will appear how much has been pledged, collected ..and all the various funds running into 6 figures.I left quickly and have not visited CC since. These peopel are not ther to serve God and the people- they are there just there to collect the $$$$.

I think many church pastors do not have the vision to save souls anymore/ What they are after is to put up mega buildings at great cost -as a monument to their enormous ambitions.

Just ook at SP- it is a fact that CC made him rich but SP lost his sense of bearing.I wouldn't be swayed by his Preaching Crap.Every time I hear him preach- I say to myself- this is the man who axed 400 who disagrred with him.

The practice of having a single so called Senior Pastor over the whole fellowship of believers is not found anywhere in the NT.But the AOG Rev's wont tell you that.Instead they will sidetrek the issue and accuse the Catholic system as having no biblical basis. If power is concentrated in any one person- then they will become abusive- as SP has demonstrated that very well.

Calvary Faith Promise supports so many missionaries and mission work overseas - so said the SP. What are they?

Missions in Sudan - this is something which I think all Calvarites should be "proud" and encouraged by! But I thought that this work has gone independent some time ago? And now without Calvary Church, they are growing and expanding! By the way it was shared makes you think that we are pouring so much of our resources (FP support) into the work! I really don't know but are we still supporting this work? And if so, how much really? (our of the RM402,000/- every month).

Missions in Vancouver - now this is even longer ago, much, much longer ago I believe. I am sure that we are no longer supporting this work financially. But again, the way it is said makes you think that we are still giving (a lot) from our FP to this work. Really?

Missions in a Restricted Country - for 4 years now. Supporting this makes sense but again, I wonder how much (from the RM402,000/- monthly FP Budget) goes towards this support?

Perhaps on Faith Promise Sunday, the church would like to mention the exactly monthly support we give to these 3 areas of missions? This will really provide good reasons for members to contribute to FP!

Total Income for Faith Promise in 2011 is Rm3,935,442 , BUT only Rm93,578 was utilised for Mission and Evangelism ! What happened to the HUGE BALANCE ?
So I was MISLEAD by DECEPTION by the Calvary Church Trustees for the past 29 years !

It was reported that the amount "spent" on Mission & Evangelism in 2007 was RM 260,000 &, for awhile, all Calvarites felt good that monthly RM 20,000 plus goes to Mission & Evangelism.

Until it was exposed at end of the 2nd day of the historic & infamous 2-day AGM, on 21st Jun 2009, when ER (CC's then treasurer) answered that the RM 200,000 "transferred" to CIM (PG's personal ministry) was "parked" (or classified) under Mission & Evangelism; which meant that ONLY a maximum of RM 60,000 actually went to Mission & Evangelism in 2007 i.e. ONLY RM 5,000/mth.

Does this make CC a BIG church? Obviously NO!

Does this make CC a Fountain-head church? Only if it is for telling lies & being non-transparent.

This weekend will be Missions Emphasis. I am sure that our speaker will speak of and encourage and challenge us to be involved in missions just like all the other speakers in the past. I am sure he will speak with conviction and out of love for God just like all speakers in he past. I am sure I will be challenged. I am sure that there will be a special missions collection just like in the past, for missions. I am also sure that after all this, and just like in the past, almost all support and pledges will continue to be used by the church and not for missions. Nothing has changed. I will be challenged and I will give to missions. The only thing that will change is that I will be giving directly to where the needs are and not to FP.

Sure, giving in faith, obedience and cheerfully are biblical, BUT, have these false prophets ever quote 2 Cor 8:5 ( it’s not about our wallet!)
&
2Cor 8:12 For if there is first a willing mind, it is accepted according to what one has, and (it means giving according to your means and NOT “emptying all yr $$$ into the offering bag” as coerced by them! It is their own brand of ‘Ponsi’!)

It pays to know exactly what God says in His Bible (no pun intended)

I think God would also choose to hug and love all those who call out and reach out to Him in their own way and in the type of music that they know best which are expressed from their souls and beings. Certainly God's love cannot be just contained to those who prefer hymns and classical music only!

The person commenting all that previously, is simply so ignorant on the beauty of God and how great God truly is. So please don't comment all that rubbish like as if God only loves the classical/hymns-music listening people anymore, or to make it such types of people can only be christians. Yucks!!

.............................................
A COMMENT ON THE ABOVE

No matter what music the modern day church is inclined to-I think the most important attitude is Reverence.I am an oldie myself- so I don't like loud music. But I would not impose that on the Christian Youth.A Baptist Church conducts its services very differently from the Charismatics. But whatever nature the form of worship the church is inclined- remember the Words of our LJC--
But the hour is coming, and now is,when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for such the Father seeks to worship him.God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth." John 4

When any fellowship of believers loses this sense of Reverence towards Gods Spirit during its worship- they might as well fold up, stop the spiritual portrayal and play "Deep Purple".

" In vain do this people worship Me..."[\written somewhere in the Bible]

Responding to Blogger of July 13,10.22am.

Apart from Hyms, there are also christian songs which can also be sung to the Lord. But rock
music & some contemporary music & songs with pop beat which are worldly are not suitable for worship & praised God. I am an elderly christian. When I was young, I was a musician and played in a rock band, though at that time I was not a christian. I don't claimed to be an expert on music, but what I have said, I know what I am talking about. As for you, you are still young and had a lot to learn on spiritual discernment & wisdom.

The above comment(s) are hilarious!

One comment suggest that we should 'worship the Father in spirit and truth' ~ sure, nothing wrong with that.
Another comment mentions that 'rock music & some contemporary music & songs with pop beat which are worldly are not suitable for worship & praised God'.

Imagine, isn't it also possible for the person playing these hymn-songs may not be even be in 'spirit and truth'.. but playing out of his own talent and ego? Also consider, on the other hand possible also isn't it, when a person who plays 'christian songs' to a 'pop' beat but plays it with 'spirit and truth' deep from his own heart and being as an expression of his worship to God?

Now tell me, which pleases God more?!

Therefore, please put off all this 'spiritual' nonsense on budging and labeling.. and on judging what ' song' must be correct for “God” etc ,etc.

Do you like harp/hymns/classical music? Some people don't. Does that mean these people are not Christian for a Christian who does not like such music taste(s)?

So many forms of worship exist! Not just conformed to your favorite hymns only.

So you know what you are talking about, you say???! And that you know so much until you can judge that I am 'still young and had a lot to learn on spiritual discernment & wisdom.'?

I think even if Jesus himself replied to your comments, you might also not even listen because you are just so full of yourself (and your own self-righteousness).

Oh how foolish a person you really are indeed!

GOD BLESS ALL THE BLOGGERS

Another week has passes us by so quickly.JUst imagine 1/2 a year has vanished!!! May God bless your worship this Sunday.

Just a suggestion here to the editors. No doubt we all share different views.God has given has 4 Gospels - the Life of Jesus -but all from different individual perspectives.

How important is the Virgin birth and the Ascension of Christ?Yet the Gospel of John makes no reference to this events at all.Other Gospels mention- "and the multitude came..." But John? He singles out individuals- Nicodemus came by night, there was a Samaritan woman, certain man was lying there for 38 years..."

I mention this because we have to accept our differences respectably. If any blogger gets too personal against another brother/sister,then editors have their work to do.

Grace & Peace be to all.

Replying to blogger July 14, 9.11am.

Young man, or perhaps you would not like to be addressed that way because you want to impresss yourself as smart & knowledgeable.

You miss the point as I am not talking about anyones' taste of music or anyones' form of worshipping God he thinks its right. That would be "man-self centredness". It is not for us to choose what kind of music or any form of worship we deemed right. Its what God reguires us & instructed us in His Word the manner He is to be worshiped. Can you understand this?? The Bible states very plainly & clearly to us on certain kind of music/songs to worship Him and build us up in our christian life. He clearly specifies in Ephesian 5:19 " Addressing one another in psalms & hyms and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with all your hearts, always and for everything giving thanks in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God the Father". Again in Colossians 3:16 "Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, as you teach and admonish one another in psalms and hyms and spiritual songs with thankfullness in your hearts to God."

As one rock star admitted "Rock music is the celebration of the physical." Gene Simmons of the Rock group KISS said "Thats what rock is all about - sex with a 100 megaton bomb, the beat." Now get this straight!! christian rock music is no different from these worldly & sinful rock music. We must know that God is HOLY, HIS SPIRIT & HIS WORD ARE HOLY and they cannot be stained with what is UNHOLY & WORLDLY. If you cannot understand this, you simply do not know what it means to worship God in His Spirit and in His Truth. We must assess and honestly ask ourself on this christian rock/contemporary pop music, "Does it stir the flesh to 'boogie' or the spirit to praise God?".

Things of the world changes, be it fashion, music or songs, etc. But the God of the Bible NEVER NEVER changes, His instructions and commandments on how He is to be worshipped are very clear and established forever, there will never be any reforms with the changing world and NO ONE has any right to change them.

I am not going to call you foolish! You have every right not to agree with what I wrote, neither am I trying to impose upon you or anyone. My views are not my own, its what God impressed upon my heart. You see the danger with we christians today is a deficiensy of spiritual discernmment and because of this many became 'self-centred' and "self-righteous" & sinned against God without realising it. This is what is happening with CC pastors and it can happen to anyone of us on anything that pertains to life even music if we failed to exercise spiritual discernment in the light of God's Word.

I had said enough and will not comment any further. The choice is yours.

Just to put in my two sen worth with this story. There was this Christian brother who died and went to heaven. As he was there with an angel, they happened to look down at a church with the congregation singing and worshipping God. As he looked hard at them, he noticed that he could only hear the voice of one old lady singing out of tune and worshipping God. The rest of the congregation was singing but nothing was audible. He then asked the angel why is it so. The angel replied that that old lady sang and worshipped the Lord from her heart while the rest of the congregation just sang without any praise or worship to our wonderful God. Hope everyone got the picture. Shalom.

I agree that Christian worship is for the purpose of honoring God. It must be holy because God is Holy; it must be pleasing and acceptable to Him. It must be worshipful and spiritual and from humble hearts which represent clean and holy lives. God does not accept worship from unholy hands and unholy hearts. The big problem today is too much music or what is called prayer and worship time leaves little time for learning the Word of God. There is nowhere in the Bible that says you can sing and dance your way to heaven. But the Bible does say to follow after peace with all men and holiness without which no man or woman shall
see God- Heb. 12:14 Questions we should ask: do I feel peace about this? Am I living in obedience to God's Word? So now you see we go back to spiritual discernment and holy living by which we judge all things. God bless you all!

Pastors need to rethink their ways of doing things instead of trying to bulldoze their way into their congregation. This AOG so called Reverends and especially SP has lost all sense of proportion and has gone on into Defensive Mode. And he is not even listening to the Congregation-instead he is deceiving the church gullibles and using the CC constitution as his shield. When questioned he gives snappy replies. When asked whether he flies business class- his scornful answer-

"WELL YOU CANT EXPECT ME TO CYCLE THERE!!!"
When questioned about the financial state- another snappy reply-

"WE CAN DO IT IF WE ALL DO OUR PART- JUST MAKE SURE YOURS IS COMING IN!!!

Its obvious that he does not like being questioned. But I believe that his glory days are over.If he is smart,he will pack up and leave before it gets worse. He has hurt and wounded many people but he carries on preaching as though CC is his personal property(It is a known fact now that many AOG Rev.treat the church as their private turf. One even told me that he does not open his pulpit to other Pastors. When I asked him "Will you send your children to a school where there is only 1 teacher?"Can children learn all the essentials of life from just one teacher?? Of course-he was aghast. What a selfish and stupid principle to live by.

These AOG Reverends are churning out a whole lot of AOG Crap these days.Does 1 Pastor have all the 9 Spritual gifts operating in his ministry? Can a church grow by just listening to 1 mans sermons? But these AOG Rev's couldnt be bothered. To them its all about control- some of them have deep feelings of insecurity and try to hide it by shouting so confidently from a pulpit.Isolate them to a different group and you see a completely different person. The seeming Lion becomes a mouse.

I believe collective responsibility is the answer. The AOG needs to revamp its system- and put an end to "one man" leadership.Another safeguard is to demand that Pastors must not have a say in how church finances are to be used.It is this aspect that is causing so many problems. This is the way I see it.Only then- we will see less AOG Rev.monkeys abusing church people-only then we will be safe from the likes of SP's lording it over the congregation.cne(Not forgetting that devilish Salesman)

Bye and God Bless.

The Church is all about people, never about buildings. Yes, we do need buildings but once the building becomes the focus, the Church ceases to be what it should be, the Body of Christ. What is the focus at Calvary Church? The people or the Calvary Convention Centre? The answer appears obvious. No?

MAD WOLF PASTORS
I cringe everytime some AOG Rev.talks about "...enlarge your tents...". That is his own ego talking.Just drive around the PJ area and notice how many mega buildings are on the rise.It is as though a silent building competition is going on out there. In the USA I visited a mega church with thousands of people. But when I turned up for prayer meeting on a Wednesday- exactly 9 people turned up-and that was inclusive of 1 Assistant Pastor, his wife & 2 children and 1 Songleader from the Church!!!

That is the real state of affairs. In Malaysia too we have the same scenario-on Sundays some hoo-haahs- loud beating of drums, clapping hands and some yellings, then out come the offering bags..and then the "..building fund PLEDGES..." and you hear the following voice,

The building fund Pledge now stands at RM18,000,000 and we have already collected RM3,200,677... Lets give God the praise....CLAP..CLAP...CLAP...AND Lets believe God for the rest....[he wont admit that he is hoping you would "help out" in giving to his vision of god.

These are the mentally imbalanced Pastors in our midst and they should go for some counselling.Everyone feels a slight heaveyheartedness at CC worship these days.Have we collected the $$$? We must "believe" in the vision of God for our church.Just have faith. How much faith...??then the poster is shown ... a mans hand holding a tiny mustard seed.
I do drop by CC whenever I can due to my field work...but I will only give what I can.We read some articles here and our family has decided not to be cowed OR made to feel guilty into giving again. If they want it that bad- then perhaps they can sell off their own property, downgrade their lifestyle-and in the words of Jellyfish and the Salesman- "...money that you have access to..." referring to EPF money and beneficiaries or Wills.

All the money appeal is done while holding a Holy Bible and using Jesus Name--and smooth speeches and soothing music in the background.I havent read of any minister in the entire NT stooping this low for the $$$.

LEFT THE FOLD

While it is true that a "man" of GOD's vision for the future building in which the church gathers might well be, for example the CCC etc, it is vital that the virtues held by the Good LORD be maintained always in the execution of the journey. When the Lord is pleased then HE will make all things possible .
